What is wicker furniture?

Wicker furniture is created by weaving a flexible branch around a metal frame. This process dates back to ancient times as man has been weaving baskets and fashioning other woven objects since the beginning of time. Wicker furniture can be made out of bamboo, willow, reed, rattan or synthetic materials.

What is Lloyd Loom?

Lloyd Loom is a furniture making process that dates back to 1917. An American by the name of Marshall B Lloyd fashioned furniture by twisting craft paper around a metal wire. He then put these threads on a loom and wove them into a fabric that became known a Lloyd Loom. These woven mats were then attached to a metal frame to form chairs, tables and other articles. Lloyd Loom furniture was incredibly popular in the 1930’s but is still considered an elegant addition to any room today. Many manufacturers still create it in the very same way.

Caring for your wicker furniture and Lloyd Loom

Due to the nature of woven furniture it is literally a dust magnet. Dirt and dust get trapped in the small spaces between the weave and if not properly cared for both Lloyd Loom and wicker can look very shabby in a short amount of time. Conversely, if looked after properly, these elegant pieces can give you many long years of joy and comfort. The most important thing to do is vacuum all the surfaces with a soft brush attachment affixed to the end of the vacuum cleaner regularly. Both Lloyd Loom and wicker should not get soaked, however, if they do get wet by accident, they should be dried quickly. That said, both can be washed using a diluted solution of dish washing liquid. It is advised to use only a damp cloth or non-scratch sponge and dab lightly. Wicker can be treated with a clear lacquer to extend its life.
