Rattan Garden Furniture

The Benefits of Buying Rattan Furniture

Rattan furniture has always been one of the most popular choices for patio, sunroom, and conservatory furnishings. However, what many people don’t know is that there are benefits beyond its amazing appearance that make rattan a desirable choice in the home. Below are some other reasons to consider this choice.

Where You Find Rattan

Many people believe the term rattan refers to a style of furniture but the name actually comes from a type of grass. There are about six hundred species of rattans in the world and most can be found in tropical environments on the continents of Australia, Asia, and Africa. Because of their unusual design, the rattan does not grow like normal trees and instead develop vine-like stems. In some cases, a rattan has grown much longer you might imagine. Some of the longest have been several hundred yards in length.

Most of the rattan used to make patio furniture comes from Indonesia which is the world’s largest supplier of the materials. Malaysia and Bangladesh, as well as the Philippines, are also big producers.

The Environmental Benefit

One of the biggest concerns many people have today is the environment, including the devastation of forests to meet the needs of the timber industry. The nice thing about rattan is that it can be harvested as an alternative to timber in these parts of the world. That means people can still earn a living without upsetting the environment or destroying important parts of the world’s forests.

Rattan garden furniture (or ‘outdoor rattan’) is actually a synthetic material that can be left out in all weathers without maintenance. This type of furniture is recyclable and therefore eco friendly.

Rattan is a good alternative for many reasons, including the faster growth rate and the easier harvesting methods. However, for that alternative to be profitable into the future people need to consider increasing the demand for rattan furniture.
